Project

The creation of ponds is a popular conservation measure. However, the factors contributing to the successful colonialization of these human-made structures are poorly understood. A better understanding is crucial to maximize conservation benefits from the establishment of such networks of ponds.

I will be collecting data from 40 newly created ponds in Northwestern Switzerland including presence of amphibians, water snails and dragonflies, as well as various environmental indicators on three spatial scales. By building models, I aim to explain the successful colonization of these animals in relation to the environmental factors. The results of my research will help to increase understanding of these systems and though boost conservation by improving practices.
