Welcome to the PopEcol group!

Things worth knowing as a new group member

Online group communication

We use Slack. If you haven’t joined yet our Slack workspace, ask your supervisor for an invitation. You can open Slack in the web browser or the Slack app. Our main communication channel is # popecol. To check out (and join) other public channels, click on Channels > Manage > Browse channels.

For video conferences, we use Zoom. Our main Zoom channel is popecol.org/zoom. If the main channel is occupied, you can try popecol.org/zoom2 or popecol.org/zoom3.

All things admin

Our admin assistant is Judith Baumgartner. Judith works for different groups within the department. On Thursdays, she works for PopEcol in room Y38-M-16.

Group meetings

We meet every Tuesday at 9 am in room Y19-M-98. Usually, you can join remotely via Zoom.

Group calendar

To inform group members about important events, we maintain a Google calendar. In this calendar, you should enter personal absences (home office, conferences, workshops, field trips, holidays, etc.) and events that are relevant to the group (internal talks, academic visitors, etc.).

To access the calendar, ask Arpat, Judith, or Stefan for an email invitation. Let them know the email address you use to log in to your Google account (if the invitation is sent to another email address, you won’t be able to access the calendar).

Group website

Since you are reading this text, you already know of our group website. If you aren’t yet on the team list, send the relevant information (name, role, office, email address) as an email or Slack message to Daniela. In that message, also indicate if you want a personal page on the website. All group members are encouraged to have such a page.

How to edit your personal page: You will get an account with a username and a password. To edit the template of your personal page, log in here. Once logged in, you can change the password; but you can’t change the username. To edit your page, first click on PopEcol (top left corner), then on Team, then on your name in the team list, and then on Edit Page in the black bar at the top of the page. To replace the picture, first click on the picture and then on the edit (pencil) button. The rest is rather self-explanatory. If not, don’t hesitate to ask Daniela (or any other group member with a personal page).

Group library

We curate a scientific library with over 500 titles in hardcopy and/or e-book format. The e-books are on the department’s file server (ieu-fs.uzh.ch > Groups > Ozgul > PopEcol_Library). To access the file server, follow the instructions given here.

Scientific activities and achievements

To keep track of our scientific activities and achievements (presentations, grants, etc.), we maintain a Google spreadsheet. Where applicable, please enter your activities and achievements; the information will be used to compile the annual reports.

Courses and workshops

The Google spreadsheet on scientific activities and achievements also contains information on useful courses and workshops.

Journal club

Occasionally, we meet to ‘talk science’. Time, place, and text are announced on Slack, channel # journal_club.

Seminars

An overview of seminars with scheduled speakers can be found here.

Social activities

Every year in May, sporty group members and friends of PopEcol participate as Residuals in the SOLA-Stafette, a relay race in and around the city of Zurich. If you are interested in participating, join the Slack channel # sola.

Other social activities may be announced via the Slack channel # social; some activities have dedicated channels (e.g., # birding).
